Today's readers feel a special affinity for St. Francis, whose suggestions for living a truly Christian life don't involve withdrawal from the world. In this enduring spiritual guide, his remarkably modern advice appears in the form of letters. The saint's frank and practical counsel ranges from embracing meditations that strengthen the resolve to maintain a virtuous existence to performing daily exercises that renew the soul.

David L. Goicoechea Agape and Bhakti with Bataille and Mark at Loyola and St. Francis

David L. Goicoechea presents his fourth volume in a series on agape. The book focuses on the complementarity of agape (Christian love) and bhakti (Hindu love). First, he shows how the Jesuit Spirituality at Loyola in Chicago and the Franciscan Spirituality at St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois, helped him to appreciate mystical love. Secondly, he shows how agape with all nine of its characteristics is central to the Gospel of Mark. Then, especially with the help of the work of Dr. Raj Singh, he shows how bhakti developed throughout the history of India. Finally, Goicoechea shows how Georges Bataille, especially with the help of St. John of the Cross, looks deeply into the Inner Experience of the Mystical Ways.

Jon M. Sweeney Lord, Make Me An Instrument of Your Peace

The Complete Prayers of St. Francis and St. Clare, with Selections from Brother Juniper, St. Anthony of Padua, and Other Early Franciscans
We do not immediately associate Francis and Clare with prayer and praying. St. Francis, according to the most common legends, rarely sat still. St. Clare did, more so, but that was probably mostly because of the convent and the grille and the conventions of the time: she couldn’t be a walkabout friar. However, they did sit still. And they stood. And they danced. And they fasted. And they sang. In all these ways, Francis and Clare prayed for hours each day, as did the brothers and sisters who came after them on the Franciscan way. This prayer book gathers the stories and words of the prayer life and prayers of these remarkable Christians.

St. Peter de Alcántara A Golden Treatise of Mental Prayer

The Spanish mystic St. Peter de Alcántara is known as the patron saint of night watchmen, as well as the patron saint of Brazil.
In A Golden Treatise of Mental Prayer, we’re treated to a glimpse into the fascinating life of this remarkable Saint who, while in prayer and contemplation, was reported to have been seen levitating and was known to perform miracles.
We’re also introduced to his methods of contemplative prayer and his teachings. Preferring to preach to the poor, Peter drew much of the inspiration for his teachings from the Old Testament, and his focus was almost always on the topic of compassion.

Francis de Sales An Introduction to the Devout Life

First published in 1609 “An Introduction to the Devout Life” is Saint Francis de Sales work which belongs to the Christian tradition of “Lectio Divina” or “Divine Reading”. Like Thomas à Kempis’ “The Imitation of Christ” it is a work intended to provide guidance to the individual desiring spiritual direction in order to lead a more devout life. Based on a series of letters between Francis and his cousin, Madame Marie de Charmoisy, who as the wife of an ambassador of the Duke of Savoy was struggling with the distractions to faith associated with court life, “An Introduction to the Devout Life” was crafted from those original letters into a guide for a more general audience. Through five parts Francis discusses the aspiration to a devout life, the use of prayer and sacraments, the personal characteristics of virtue necessary to the devout life, the challenge of temptation and how to overcome it, and the practices for renewing and confirming the soul in devotion. An immensely popular work of Christian spirituality “An Introduction to the Devout Life” remains as relevant today as when it was first published.

G. K. Chesterton St. Francis of Assisi

Saint Francis of Assisi is the founder of the Franciscan Order and one of the most influential figures of medieval Christian history. First published in 1923, G. K. Chesterton’s “St. Francis of Assisi” is considered by many to be the definitive biography of the beloved religious leader and saint. Saint Francis was born to a prosperous merchant family and lived his early life carefree and consumed with material possessions. He underwent a religious conversion as a young adult and began to devote himself to a life of poverty and faith. While Saint Francis was never formally educated or ordained as a priest, he traveled the countryside preaching and built a strong following of faithful devotees who were inspired by his pure life of abstinence and piety. Saint Francis eventually received formal permission from the pope to create the Franciscan Order, which grew quickly. Centuries later, Saint Francis remains venerated the world over and is often associated with his love of animals and the natural world. “St. Francis of Assisi” is an engrossing and riveting portrayal of a man wholly devoted to his faith. This edition includes a biographical afterword.

Saint Athanasius On the Incarnation (Translated by Archibald Robertson)

One of the most important works of Christian theology, the treatise “On the Incarnation” was written by the fourth century Egyptian religious leader St. Athanasius of Alexandria. An influential Christian theologian and church elder, St. Athanasius, also known as Athanasius the Great, Athanasius the Confessor, and Athanasius the Apostolic, was the twentieth bishop of Alexandria from 328 AD to 373 AD. St. Athanasius played an important role in the First Council of Nicaea in 325 AD where Roman Emperor Constantine the Great convened the council to address the question of whether Jesus of Nazareth was the son of God and distinct from his Father. “On the Incarnation” expands with clarity on the conclusion reached by the First Council of Nicaea, that God became man through His son, Jesus of Nazareth, and through Jesus, we too may become one with God. While brief, St. Athanasius explores in detail why God became flesh through Jesus and why this transformation was necessary to save the corrupted human soul and prepare it for a perfect and immortal union with God. This treatise, by one of the most important and influential teachers of Christian philosophy, is an essential read for all students of the Christian faith. This edition follows the translation of Archibald Robertson.
